our story

Why uncommon ground?

What makes us different to other landscape design companies? Sustainability. That word that gets thrown around too commonly these days, but constitutes a 'sustainable' landscape? We treat each project as an individual space. No two gardens are the same, even within the same project. When it comes to design, we believe you shouldn't look at a garden with a cookie cutter approach. Instead, several important factors should be taken into consideration: The Environment - Where is the location of the garden? Is it coastal, inland, south facing, north facing? Existing conditions - Rain-shadows, micro climates, neighbouring buildings, established trees, soil? Economic - Do you need to spend money on all aspects of the project, or can we re-use and work with existing elements? Waste - Almost 100% of the waste created on our projects is recycled, reclaimed or reused. Footprint of materials - Do you need to use imported stone when we have stone quarries in Australia? Origin of materials, mulches, crushed rock etc. Toxicity of inputs - We use certified organic and low VOC inputs in all our projects. Ryan Young started his sustainability journey in 2008 and has embarked on ensuring that all his projects have a strong sustainability underpinning. Since that time Ryan has progressed steadily towards attaining the best practice objectives of sustainability in all of his projects.
